American comfort food, made halal.
Osama Abushanab was born in Palestine and raised in Jordan. He came to New York in the 1990s and moved to Milwaukee in 2009, working in restaurants the whole way.
For years he ran 76 Steak and Potato on the city’s north side. When that lease ended, he bought a former Chinese restaurant on S. 27th Street, near the Islamic Center, St. Luke’s and Leon’s Frozen Custard. His partner, Mohammad Imran, came on as a full owner, and 27th Steak & Potato opened on June 30, 2023.
The menu kept what people loved about the old place: steak, loaded potatoes, wings, burgers and Philly steaks. What changed is that every bit of it is now halal.

He wanted his own family, and families like his, to be able to walk in and order anything. Most of the people at the counter aren’t Muslim. They come for the food.
What halal means here
- Everything we serve is halal, including all of our beef and chicken.
- Halal meat comes from animals raised and treated humanely and slaughtered according to Islamic law, with the blood drained.
- The bacon bits on our potatoes and fries are vegetarian, made from soy.
